There is a Divertisement Chapter near the end of Cold Steel 2 that has you play as characters from Zero/Azure though. So if you don't want to just twittle your thumbs for a year waiting for Zero to release. As Zero and Azure take place roughly the same time as Cold Steel 1 & 2. The number of events like that get expanded a lot in Cold Steel 3 and 4. Late in Cold Steel 2, things start to happen where it is really beneficial to have played the earlier games. There are events that happen in Cold Steel that have their full background presented in Zero and Azure, but most aren't critical to the plot. That said, though, it isn't particularly bad to play Cold Steel first just to see if you like the general aspects of the game, especially since that game is newer than these. The series has a lot of moments that feel more rewarding when you've played the earlier games. All the games have one overarching plot and involve people living on the same continent over the course of several years. They have a much bigger emotional impact playing the games that way. So, unless you're unable to play the Sky series, and seeing you're on Steam, I don't see why you would be, I seriously urge you to play it before Zero, Azure and then Cold Steel.Originally posted by jlawleraz:The release order helps a lot with the character stories. In fact, IMO the very first game, Trails in the Sky FC is the best game of them all. In addition, the previous series (Trails in the Sky) is a great series on it's own and completely worth playing for many other reasons than just this particular story arc. Seeing only the resolution of this arc (in this game) while missing the buildup to it (in the previous two games, Sky SC and Sky the 3rd) would mean you will have a far lesser experience regarding this arc as you would otherwise, which would be a shame. Stabbey is largely right, but I do want to say that the 'notable story arc tied to a story arc in the previous Trails in the Sky series' he's referring to, while a relatively small part of Trails from Zero, is one of the best and most emotionally gripping story arcs in the series.
